A Mormon president?

We all by know that there is a member of the LDS Church running for US president in 2008 - Mitt Romney (aka "Mitt the Mormon"). The church has come under scrutiny with Mitt running and there has been a lot already in the media about it.

Here's a well-written in-depth article by Laurie F. Maffly-Kipp, who teaches American religious history at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She explores Mormonism and the implications of what it would mean to have an active, practicing Mormon as president. Ms. Maffly-Kipp focuses her attention on what she feels are the three most relevant issues: religious authority, moral values and church and state. I thought this would be a negative article about the church, but actually it's quite good.

Nicole Richie in and out of jail

I really can’t believe this. Nicole Richie was admitted to jail this morning after being convicted for driving under the influence of drugs last year. She was supposed to serve four days, but was released after just 82 minutes! Flippin’ heck!! She beat her friend Paris Hilton on this one! I guess money talks again.

So what does this tell young people that idolise people like Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton? I guess it tells them that it’s OK to drive while drunk or stoned and you’ll just have to spend a few hours, or even minutes, in jail. I think all these young female “stars” need to be round up and shot!

President James E. Faust Passes Away

It's always sad when a great leader in the church dies. President James E Faust, 2nd counselor in the First Presidency passed away yesterday. I guess there will be someone else just as great to take his place in the First Presidency. I guess we'll have to wait until next General Conference to find out who.

Here's an article from the LDS website:

SALT LAKE CITY 10 August 2007 President James E. Faust, second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died at his home early Friday morning surrounded by his family.
President Faust, 87, had served in the First Presidency since 1995 and as a General Authority of the Church for 35 years. A Church statement today said that President Faust had died of “causes incident to age.”
The funeral will be held on Tuesday in the Salt Lake Tabernacle on Temple Square.
President Faust was appointed second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 12 March 1995. The First Presidency is the highest presiding body in the government of the Church
